ISO 9001
ISO 9001:2026 is published: what changes and when you must transition
The short answer
ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026. Sites certified to ISO 9001:2015 have a three-year transition period, expected to end around September 2029. Your 2015 certificate stays valid until then, but don’t leave the transition to the last year.

What happened
The sixth edition of ISO 9001 was published on 16 September 2026, replacing ISO 9001:2015 as the current edition. Publication starts the transition period for certified organisations.
Does my ISO 9001:2015 certificate still count?
Yes. Your 2015 certificate remains valid during the transition period. The exact end date is set by the International Accreditation Forum and applied by your certification body, so confirm it with them in writing.
What is changing?
The revision is an update, not a rewrite. Published commentary points to stronger emphasis on quality culture and leadership, clearer risk and opportunity thinking, organisational resilience and oversight of suppliers and outsourced processes. Check the published standard for the exact clause wording.
What should I do now?
Buy the 2026 standard and run a gap analysis against your current system. Then ask your certification body three questions: the last date they will do an initial 2015 certification, which of your scheduled audits will assess the transition, and how many extra audit days they will add.
Don’t wait for 2029. Certification bodies must transition first, and sites that leave it late will compete for the same auditor days.
General information only
